Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan celebrates 103rd Republic Day with national zeal and expresses their gratitude to the people and government of Australia for their continuous and resolute support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Azerbaijan.

On May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was born as the first successful secular democratic republic in the Muslim world. The ADR, founded on the core principles of parliamentary democracy and secularity and inspired by Azerbaijani people’s determination for independence, was an example of a new state and society combining the best of two worlds – the democratic values of Europe and the charm of the Eastern culture.

“Despite surviving for only 23 months, the measures taken during the first republic were important in terms of establishing the foundations of our independent statehood and determining the future path of development”, Ramil Gurbanov, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan said in a statement.

He said that democratic rights and freedoms, recognition of equal rights of all citizens regardless of ethnic and religious affiliation, and more importantly the extension of suffrage to women were among the significant accomplishments of the republic, making Azerbaijan one of the first countries in the world and even ahead of most European countries, and the very first majority-Muslim nation to grant women equal political rights with men.

After restoring its state independence in 1991 under the new historical conditions, our people established an independent Azerbaijani state based on the traditions of the Democratic Republic. Especially, after coming to power with people’s support in 1993, the National Leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev gave a new ray of hope to his nation and laid the stone of a modern Azerbaijan with strong economic development.

“Today, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the process of building a democratic, legal, secular state and civil society in the Republic of Azerbaijan continues successfully. Political, economic and social reforms are being successfully implemented in the country”, Ramil Gurbanov added.

Modern Azerbaijan exercises its sovereign rights and pursues an independent policy in all spheres and is a dynamic, modern country, actively contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security and promoting tolerance and multiculturalism in domestic and international levels.

The Republic of Azerbaijan has become a reliable international partner and initiator of transport and energy projects infrastructure of regional and global importance, thus achieving the role of a key investment destination in the region.

Over the years, Azerbaijan has steadily increased its international weight, becoming a reliable country in the world. Azerbaijan assumed the non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council for the period of 2012-2013, and secured 155 votes from UN Member States in the General Assembly, significantly more than the two-thirds majority required as a clear demonstration of trust and support by the international community to my country.

Chairing the Non-Aligned Movement – the second biggest organization of the world since 2019 is another success story for Azerbaijan in the international arena. At the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, the first-ever virtual summit of the Non-Alignment Movement took place on 4 May, 2020 to discuss an effective global response to COVID-19, and Azerbaijan donated AUD $40 million to the countries in need via the World Health Organization in the fight against the pandemic.

On bilateral ties with Australia, Mr, Ramil said that Republic of Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the relations with the Commonwealth of Australia.

Both countries enjoy constantly developing friendly bilateral relations and mutually beneficial cooperation in a number of areas, including political, humanitarian, parliamentary contacts, and strong resource-focused trade and investment ties. Australian companies provide services supporting the energy and construction sectors in Azerbaijan, as well as Azerbaijani professionals work in the leading energy companies in Australia.

It is noteworthy that in recent years, Azerbaijan’s sovereign wealth fund has made significant investments (around 1.5 billion AUD) in Australia.

Moreover, despite the distance, trade turnover between our states reached its peak of almost AUD $450 million in 2019.

Upon the instruction of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) has donated humanitarian aid to the Australian Red Crescent Society to help eliminate the consequences of bushfires in 2019 in Australia.

“We are especially thankful to Australia for its continuous and resolute support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Azerbaijan with a reference to the importance of universally recognized norms and principles of international law”, Chargé d’Affaires said adding our relationship is continually evolving and the two countries anticipate more intensive and increasing cooperation in the coming years.

He said that in the post-pandemic period, the Embassy of Azerbaijan is looking forward to working with the counterparts in Australia on all counts to contribute to the further expansion and diversification of mutual cooperation.

He also greeted the vibrant Azerbaijani community in Australia on the occasion of National Day of Azerbaijan.
