Canberra, 10 December 2025 — Cuba’s new ambassador to Australia, Mrs. Gilma Moreira Lino, formally assumed her duties on Wednesday after presenting her credentials to the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, at Government House in Canberra.

The ceremony, conducted with full military honours, marked the official start of Ambassador Moreira Lino’s tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to the Commonwealth of Australia.

She conveyed to the Governor-General warm greetings from the Cuban Government and expressed appreciation for Australia’s longstanding support for Cuba’s annual resolution at the United Nations opposing the US economic blockade.

During a brief meeting following the presentation of credentials, Ambassador Moreira Lino reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Australia. She noted progress in several key areas, including education, sports, biotechnology, and mining, and underscored Cuba’s readiness to expand cooperation.

The ambassador also expressed Cuba’s interest in developing joint initiatives in triangular cooperation, aimed at supporting Pacific island nations through collaborative projects involving both countries.

Cuba and Australia have enjoyed uninterrupted diplomatic relations for more than 35 years, underpinned by mutual respect, constructive engagement, and cooperation across multilateral platforms.
