Following a high profile state visit to Pakistan by Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Qatar on Tuesday announced $3 billion dollars worth of new investments in Pakistan, in the form of deposits and direct investments, Qatar News Agency quoted Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani as saying.
Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the Qatari support comes after the Amir’s visit to Pakistan to underscore the deep relations between the two brotherly countries and peoples.
“This support expresses Qatar’s confidence in the strength of Pakistan’s economy and the vision and good management of the current government headed by Prime Minister Imran Khan”, he maintained.
According to the foreign minister by announcing this new investment package, the size of the Qatari-Pakistani economic partnership will go up to $9bn.
“Qatar affirms its aspiration for further development in the relations between the two countries and peoples at all political, economic, sports, cultural and other levels”, Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said.
Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani paid a two-day state visit to Pakistan on June 22-23, first by Qatar Amir in four years.
During the visit, the Amir held wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Dr Arif Alvi including enhancing relations in various fields, especially in economy, trade, investment, energy, tourism, education and other fields. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Qatar Amir during his talks with Pakistani leadership urged the world to address the crisis in the region with negotiation not by force.
Soon after the Amir arrival, Pakistan and Qatar signed three memoranda of understanding on trade and investment and cooperation on financial intelligence and tourism in presence of Prime Minister Imran and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim.
During the visit, President Alvi conferred Pakistan’s highest civil award Nishan-i-Pakistan upon Sheikh Tamim at a special investiture ceremony at Presidential Palace in Islamabad.
The two leaders also discussed the Afghan issue and Middle East crisis and agreed to continue working closely for regional peace and stability.
