Chinese Ambassador to Australia Liu Jinsong has held talks with Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra, discussing the future direction of bilateral relations and opportunities to strengthen cooperation across various sectors.
Liu paid a courtesy call on Senator Wong at Parliament House on October 12, 2026, with the two sides exchanging views on China-Australia relations, high-level exchanges and cooperation in the next stage of engagement.
The meeting comes as Australia and China continue efforts to stabilise relations and maintain diplomatic dialogue following several years of tensions over trade, security and strategic differences.
China remains one of Australia’s largest trading partners, with the two countries maintaining substantial economic ties, particularly in resources, agriculture, education and tourism. However, differences over regional security, foreign interference and the broader strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific continue to shape the relationship.
Both governments have emphasised the importance of dialogue and practical engagement, while managing their differences through diplomatic channels.
The meeting between Liu and Wong underscores the ongoing role of high-level diplomatic exchanges in advancing bilateral cooperation and maintaining communication between the two countries.
